How to: Associate multiple applications with one file extension.
Solution:
Edit the initial application associated from the 'Registered File Types' list. Add a new action description and enter the path containing the second application. Right-click on a file, and select the second application.
1) Open Windows Explorer.
'Windows Explorer' on 'Start' menu
2) Select the 'View' menu and select 'Options...'. (The 'Options' dialog box appears.)
3) Click the 'File Types' tab.
4) Select the desired application file type from the 'Registered file types' list box.
5) Click 'Edit...'. (The 'Edit File Type' dialog box appears.)
6) Click 'New...'. (The 'New Action' dialog box appears.)
7) Type 'Open with <other application>' in the 'Action' box, where <other application> is another application with which you want to associate that file type, besides the current one.
NOTE: This entry appears as a selection on the file's pop-up menu when you right-click on it.
8) Do one of the following:
a) Type the complete path of the program file in the 'Application used to perform action' box.
NOTE: Include quotation marks before and after the path as indicated below.
EXAMPLE: 'C:\Program FILES\ACCESSORIES\WORDPAD.EXE'
(where 'C' represents the root directory).
b) If the path or filename is not known:
1] Click 'Browse...'. (The 'Open With' dialog box appears.)
'Browse...' button
2] Select the drive containing the application program file from the 'Look in' drop-down list box.
3] Double-click the folder containing the program file in the list box.
4] Select the program file from the list box.
5] Click 'Open'. (The 'New Action' dialog box reappears, with the application's path and filename in the 'Application used to perform action' box.)
Enter path
9) Click 'OK'. (The 'Add New File Type' dialog box reappears, with the new action added to the 'Actions' list box for that file type.)
10) Click 'Close'. (The 'Options' dialog box reappears.)
11) Click 'Close'.
12) To open the file with WordPad instead of Microsoft Word:
a) Locate and select the file in Windows Explorer or 'My Computer'.
b) Select the 'File' menu and select <action>, where <action> is the text you typed in step 7); for example, 'Open with WordPad'.
NOTE: If the file is opened in the regular manner (by double-clicking), it opens in the application with which the file type was originally associated.
